Chiboo

Chiboo is Elian's animal familiar — an Owl Gryphon, a small creature that combines owl and cat features. Cat-sized. No larger than a house cat, despite possessing the bearing of something far more ancient. This species is unknown to the people of Trimont; Chiboo is the only one they have encountered.

Elian found Chiboo during his traumatic two-year stranding on an unnamed fragment after his crash. Their bond was forged through survival and mutual dependence — it is more partnership than pet ownership.

How They Met

On day 12 of the stranding, Chiboo appeared and watched Elian struggle to repair his skim. It disappeared. The next day it returned, carrying branches in its talons. Over the following weeks, day after day, it brought materials from neighboring islands — strong vines, flexible wood, scraps of canvas from ancient wrecks. Chiboo helped Elian survive. Chiboo helped him escape.

Characteristics

  • Navigates through storms that would challenge most creatures
  • Communicates through specific chirps and body language that Elian has learned to interpret over years
  • Shows patience and a kind of wisdom — a deliberate contrast with Swift, Elian's previous kestrel familiar, who was lost to overconfidence
  • Seems to understand complex situations, not just immediate commands
  • Has never led Elian astray

Role in the Story

Chiboo serves multiple functions in Skies Under Trimont. Practically, it is Elian's navigator and scout — in the storm sequence, Chiboo guides both pilots when visual navigation fails. Narratively, it is the thread connecting Elian's past trauma to his present situation: where Swift was a symbol of the confidence that got Elian into trouble, Chiboo represents the wiser version of that same drive.

The moment that breaks Elian's paralysis is watching Chiboo follow Taller into the storm. Chiboo chooses to go. Elian cannot let his familiar face that alone.

Needs Content

What goes here: More about Chiboo as a creature beyond its role in the plot — what does it eat? Where does it sleep? Any details about how it actually communicates (the chirps and body language that Elian reads — are there specific examples?). Also: see Fauna for the unresolved size contradiction with the AI fauna file.

What's needed

  • Resolve the size contradiction in Fauna — cat-sized is the canonical description, but confirm this is intentional
  • Physical description beyond "cat-sized, owl-cat hybrid"
  • Examples of the communication system Elian and Chiboo have developed
  • Where Chiboo came from — does it come from the fragment Elian was stranded on? Is it possible there are others of its kind nearby?
